In 13 Reasons Why
My kids have their own technological devices and we have a Netflix account. One day my 14 year old daughter tells me she's halfway through a great show. She had binge watched 6 episodes one night. I asked her what it was and she said, "13 Reasons Why." I left it at that. The next day I heard chatter about the show and found out what it was about. By the time I went to follow-up with her, she had finished it. My other daughter, 16, was half way through. I had missed the opportunity to watch it before them to judge whether it was appropriate. I had also missed the chance to watch it with them. I did find out that a lot of their friends had watched it as well. I took the opportunity to talk to them about what they had watched. I didn't realize the impact the show would have on my 14 year old. Some real-life situations compounded, for her, what she had viewed in the series. I wonder how many other teenagers watch it without their parents knowing?
